This is great opportunity to buy unique gifts and patronize the small merchants and crafters.   The vendors are always a mix of out of town crafters and local, but either way, you will be supporting the small businesses.

They also have several food vendors, so plan to spend the day and have lunch and/or dinner while you’re there!

Bon Voyage Clarence

Payroll tax calendar of the day:  monthly deposits are due October 15th; quarterly returns are due October 31st.

After building himself up by eating lots of milkweed leaves, Clarence the caterpillar prepared his chrysalis and began his metamorphosis.

Now we wait while Clarence is undergoing his metamorphosis.

Here are some more pictures of monarchs and their chrysalises:

Be sure to watch the video here of the monarch hatching!

After reading that the chrysalis would stay green for a week to ten days, I started to worry about Clarence because his stayed green for over two weeks.  Finally, after two weeks and a day, the chrysalis turned dark, which is the next stage of development.  The following morning, Clarence hatched and stretched out his wings.

After waiting a few hours to dry his wings, he was ready to take off.

Clarence was getting ready to take off.

Clarence is now on his way to Mexico, where he and the other monarchs migrate to spend the winter.  I’ll be thinking about him every time the highway plow pushes a bunch of snow in my driveway.

Clarence is preparing for his trip

Payroll tax calendar of the day:  monthly payroll tax deposits are due October 15th; quarterly returns are due October 31st.

Meet Clarence, (named after the Clarence Farmer’s Market, where I got him), a monarch butterfly caterpillar.  After Clarence goes through his metamorphosis, he will be flying to Mexico for the winter.

Clarence was born at the Eastern Monarch Butterfly Farm.  They raise and sell caterpillars and chrysalises (although the caterpillars are done for the season now) as well as native Swamp Milkweed to plant in your yard for the caterpillars to eat. They will be at the Clarence Farmer’s Market until the end of the season.

Clarence’s job is to eat.

Clarence’s job as a caterpillar was to eat milkweed leaves and grow.   Then  he prepared to make his chrysalis hanging on top of his enclosure.  Right now he in in his chrysalis awaiting his transformation.

Still time to enjoy Woodlawn Beach

Payroll tax calendar of the day:  monthly payroll tax deposits are due October 15th.   Quarterly returns are due October 31st.

The swimming season may have ended at Woodlawn Beach, but you can still enjoy the park.  Enjoy the boardwalk and the beach itself to sit in the sun or take a walk along the sand.  The park is open year round.

There’s still plenty of early autumn warm weather ahead and you can search for sea shells without all those pesky bathers in the way!

You can enjoy the beach even after swim season has ended.

Quaker Arts Festival this weekend

Payroll tax calendar of the day: quarterly sales tax returns are due September 20th.  Monthly payroll tax deposits for September are due October 15th.

Autumn officially starts this Sunday.   Where did the summer go?  At least there will be some fall festivals coming up to enjoy being outdoors and the warm weather that’s still around for few more weeks.

Saturday and Sunday the 21st and 22nd is the Quaker Arts Festival in Orchard Park.   Do some holiday shopping, take in all the beautiful arts and crafts, and watch the entertainment.  Shuttle buses will be running on both days from the parking lot by the Chestnut Ridge tennis courts.   While you’re there, you will want to enjoy something to eat.  The pumpkin funnel cakes look especially intriguing!

Sad to see the summer go

Payroll tax calendar of the day:  Monthly payroll tax deposits are due Monday, September 16th.  Don’t forget that NY withholding will be due when the liability for the quarter reaches $700.  It will be due in either 3 or 5 business days, depending on the total taxes you paid in the last year.  Quarterly sales tax returns are due September 20th.

Hard to believe that it was only 2 weeks ago that I was enjoying the summer at the Canadian National Exhibition.   Seems like ages ago.   Now starts the long eleven month countdown to next summer’s Corn Festival, Erie County Fair, and CNE.  Sigh ……….

In 2012, the CNE built this new skyride.  While I can see why all the riders should follow these rules, as they are passing over the crowds, one does wonder why it would be necessary to tell everyone.

CNE Skyride 2013

Was it really necessary to tell people that?
